Peñaranda de Duero exists in two dimensions. The first is the one any visitor perceives upon entering the Plaza Mayor: stone, monuments, an open sky, and centuries of history written in plain sight. The second is invisible to all but those who seek it out: a network of tunnels, vaulted chambers, and subterranean cavities running beneath the very streets one walks, a silent testament to an economy built entirely upon wine.

Upon the rocky outcrop that commands the town, the Castle of Peñaranda has stood watch over the horizon of the Ribera del Duero for more than a thousand years. Beneath the houses of the historic quarter, the underground cellars preserve the memory of the wine presses, the barrels, and the labour of those who made the vine the animating force of the town.
